The French Revolution is one of the decisive phases in the farmation of modem democracy. But the relationship of both is complex and strained. In the west, democracy was always the direct one before the modern times and at the early days of the French Revolution, It had still a traditional meaning. However this democracy was difficult to be carried into effect in the large modern state, and more importantly it couldn't be recognized as such because of the radicality of the principle of national or popular sovereignty. Therefore a massive political mobilization and participation of the popular classes made democracy into a real agenda and the French Revolution became a dynamic stage for various experiments on democracy, but also how to tame the movements and claims of the people became a urgent problem for the part of the revolutionaries. Consequently a senes of the attempt appeared to rid democracy of its class contents at the same time in preserving the term. This article try to show the tensions and complexities of this double efforts by surveying the transformation of the revolutionaries(especlally Sieyes, Condorcet, Robespierre)' views on the national or popular sovereignty.
