The Independence of August 15 served as an important event that revolutionized the social action of the Korean Catholic Church. The Catholic Church whose faith and missionary work had been secured by political power began to affirmatively expand religious activities, establishing a close relationship to political power to enable growth of the church and intensity of social influence in a multi-religion situation.
These progressive activities of the Catholic Church facilitated a close relationship with political power, and, at the same time, contributed to production and replenishment of the ideology of pro-American anti-communism, which was the political ideology of domination. However, this was the result of the combination of traditional ideas of the Church which considered communists as a group of atheists who threatened religious beliefs, pro- American anti-communism that was a major pastoral policy of the Roman Curia at that time, and the church's experiences of religious persecution by communists in the North area.
The friendly relations of the Korean Catholic Church with political powers had become confrontational as the Lee Seung Man government strengthened its dictatorship. The Catholic Church began to playa significant role fighting against the dictatorship, and also started to become a major support group for the Opposition. Yet, as the Roman Curia gave instructions to stop the activities against the Korean government, the Church had become passive in the fight against the government.
The progressive participation of the Korean Catholic Church in politics served as an important indicator that the Church dived into the society actively instead of the Korean Catholic Church's traditional sequestration and passiveness, which the church had shown for a long time. It also contributed to the Church's growth; as members of the Church, middle and elite classes were flowed into the Church that had consisted mainly of the lower class.
The Korean Church, as a vicariate, which is not a diocese, was under direct instructions from the Roman Curia; therefore, the Korean Church had little autonomy. Because of that, the Korean Catholic Church's standpoint about political power and the ideology of domination was always based on pastoral policy and instructions from the Roman Curia. This was reflected in resistance to the dictating government, the church's standpoint about the May 16 military coup, and so on. Therefore, the analysis about social activities of the Korean Catholic Church after the Independence of August 15 should be made considering variables such as the standpoint of the Roman Curia and a trend of world churches, as well as inner factors of Korean society.
