The family is a product of the interaction between universal human desires and the ideology that realizes those
desires. This study focuses on the orientation of human desires and its social construction under Confucianism. Factors that constitute desires need to be analyzed, given that human desires are social and historical constructions rather than things which have essential existence. While the family in Confucianism reflects the desire to overcome human beings' biological limitedness, it produces the logics of inclusion and exclusion on the basis of the distinction of gender.
In other words, the symbolic world of human beings has been made up of imaginations of the male members of society and the Confucian family has been constituted by the discursive transformation of the particularities of men into the universalities of humans in general The reconsideration of the Confucian family in this way is to raise the question of what the family in our society should be and to reflect upon the forces that facilitate and restrict the organization of human relations in our society.
