Discrimination against women is a violation of human rights and violence against women. Discrimination against women and violation of women's rights are most clearly revealed in sexual violence against women. Unfortunately Korea has been ranked 2nd in the world in occurrences of sexual violence. Gender violence, in a broad sense, includes general violence against women and sexual violence, but this study is more focused on sexual violence.
These days sexual violence occurs everywhere-neighborhood, streets, cinemas, workplaces, churches, schools, public transportations, cyberspace, and even during dates. Sexual violence is not a matter of sex but of violence, and not a loss of women chastity but a violation of human dignity and wills. In reality, however, victims tend to hide the past and live in shame and pain. Considering that churches and society are prejudiced about and lack understanding of sexual violence, this study investigates that sexual violence against women does not occur in a separate way but within unequal social context through examining the concept and current situation of sexual violence, an obvious form of criminal violence against women. Lastly, this study suggests challenges in eradication of and countermeasures against sexual violence by examining supportive system and services for the sexual violence victims.
