The construction and the management of Seowon (a lecture hall). Sawoo(a shrine )in Naepo area in the late period of Chosun Dynasty are investigated comparing with those in another area.
Seowon.Sawoo were built in Naepo area in the first half period of 17th century to pay tribute to the memory of the persons who had excelled in scholarship and honor. There are Hwaamseowon in Boryong, which was the first Seowon, Jeongchungsa in Gyolseong and Namyeeheungsawoo in Danggin.
In the late period of 17th century Nokwoonseowon in Hongjoo and Hwaamseowon in Boryong were set up and named by the king. And Songgoksa was built in Seosan to look back upon the memory of Yu,bang-taek and Jeong,shin-bo. In this period the political troubles between political parties was reflected in the construction and the management of Seowon.Sawoo and Seowonhyangjeon(a dispute between Secwons) took place but it didn’t happen in Naepo area, which is different from another area.
In the early period of 18th century several Seowon was builted and Chuhyang(a horne town where has an ancestral burial ground) was developed. It was promoted by Noron(a party) systematically.
After the late period of 18th century the characteristic of the management of Seowon. Sawoo was that broken Seowon was rebuilted , Chuhyang was developed and Sawoo was set up newly. The example rebuilted is Seongamseowon in Seosan. Chuhyang was developed in Songgoksa and Hoeamseowon in Yesan.
In this period the activity of the governei’ s family in the management of Seowon attracts attention. Especially Gyongjoo Kims’ family and Andong Kims’ family intervened in the management of Seowon. It seems to be connected with their political phase as well as economic condition. And what the same blood had lived in the area had effect upon, too.
Through 19th century from the late 18th century 9Sawoo were managed by the families in Nepo area. There were 4 in the placewhere Chiso of Hongjoomok was situated, 1 in Gyolseong, 1 in Haemi, 1 in Taean, 1 in Seosan. It seems that there are fewer Seowons. Sawoos in Naepo than those in another Hoseojibang(Chungcheongdo) if we consider the scale of Naepo area.
