It was not until the 1970s that people in South Korea and the western world came to know that there were serious religious practitioners in North Korea. Due to politico-economic considerations the North Korean government launched an “open-door” policy in the 1970s. It was intended for political and economic cooperation with the western world. South-North Korean, as well as international, dialogues and exchanges followed. North Koreans found that religious organizations and groups in South Korea and in the world were particularly interested in this. Naturally, religious organizations in North Korea increasingly took a significant role in the dialogue and interchange.
At first, South Korean and foreign visitors felt dubious of North Korean religions and their adherents. There were few physical signs of religion, and religious practices the visitors witnessed were strange to their “western” standard. However, as the interchange grew in numbers foreign and South Korean visitors understood that the strangeness resulted from nothing other than the unique nature of the North Korean society. Most people came to acknowledge the sincerity of North Korean religious people. On the other hand, the North Korean government and religious organizations learned much about religion from their South Korean and international partners. They made serious efforts to adjust to outside expectations on religious matters.
International religious organizations and Koreans outside the Korean peninsula started religious dialogues and exchanges with North Korea. But the South Koreans immediately took part in the effort. North-South religious dialogues and exchanges have been developed into such a degree that they became a major channel for South-North dialogue. Ideological differences that still separate South and North Koreas pose many a problem. Nevertheless, religious people in the two Koreas came to understand each other better. If mutual understanding is a required element in the reunification effort, this is a precious achievement. Besides, the dialogue helped North Korean religious organizations establish themselves to be a respectable entity in their society. The North-South religious dialogue came a long, perilous way. but the journey ahead will be farther and even more hazardous.
