If we grasp the meaning of modern literature on the hypothesis of ‘modern as a system’, we may find the exclusive areas without intention. Because this hypothesis was established by the metaphor of ticket office for southbound train, going to Japan through Busan.
Therefore, we need to understand the other writers who get on the northbound train for making a new literary territory beyond the centripetal force of the ‘modern as a system’ While the most northbound writers were armed with their own ideologies, the case of Choi, Seo-hae emigrated into the north for the escape of his poverty. For that matter, his works showed the spontaneously mixed feelings for his emotions about the class and about the people.
And we may also find the conspicuous aspects that he have suggested his objectivity through the subjectivity as a form of fantasy, it is related with the popular emotions without permeated by the modern system These characteristics of the works of Choi, however, have the limit of not going further to the ideological levels. But his works also has the merit for restoring the complex aspects of peole, for it has no process for screening the reality of Korean peole emigrated into Manchuria by the prisms of ideologies.
Therefore, if we may extract his consciousness as a writer through the works of other writers who also went northbound, his works may extract the consciousness of the people. And we may acquire the crucial points for the deep understanding of the matters of class and of the people, if we compare the two layers facing each other.
