The beginning of modern Korea is marked by the adoption of the civilization model. Civilization, which unifies the world in a single criteria of western civilization, entails the structure of imitation and its failure. The underdeveloped which eager to catch up with the developed are always lagging behind, and the equality myth of civilization reveals itself as fake. During the 1900’s Korea first enters into the belief system of the civilization model and soon comes to the impossibility of imitation and equality. The subject of civilization, the nation, faces to the annexation to Japan.
A new backdrop is necessary for the reformation of the nation as the subject. It was invented during World War I in the 1914~18. World War I, which discloses the limit and contradiction of western civilization, and makes a practical step for discovery of ‘mankind’. Koreans are beginning to experience themselves as members of mankind, and are finding their new position as a nation as a specified universality. Ra Hye-Seok and Kim Gi-Jin show the scent of the second inauguration of the nation-a nation in mankind. Ra asserts the importance of Korean reality, and Kim overlaps Korea with the new invention of the proletariat. They make their way to Korean reality as a universality and a particularity at the same time, and invent a new path to a world reality in a cosmopolitan sense. Hence civilization-failure and mankind-nation schemes are rooted as two ways of thinking of the nation and the world.
