This study is designed to explore the significance of the reformed church in view of commitment from God and witness to the world In actuality, the Reformation of the sixteenth century did not initially intend secede from the Roman Catholic Church in the Middle Ages but to implement them more thoroughly which had been overlooked by the Medieval Church.
Calvin, one of the progenitors of the Reformed Church or the Presbyterian Church, and his followers laid an undivided stress upon the unity and the universality of the church. For them, these two aspects are the prerequisites to the divine commitment by which the church should live. More specifically, he viewed both the proclamation of the Gospel and the administration of the sacraments as the fundamental characteristics of that commitment.
In order to embody the divine commitment entrusted to the church, Calvin and his followers came up with some cardinal features through which it could be realized: sola Scriptura, Church as Gemeinde, justitia propter Christum, the sovereignty of Christ, diversity in unity, the doctrine of election, the unity of the church, the new modes of worship, and the emphasis on the lay people's gifts.
To fulfill the responsibility of witnessing to the world, on the other hand, the Reformed church should abide by the Word of God both in the church and in the world. Otherwise, the Reformed Christians will not be able to exert authority to proclaim the Gospel, which is the central object of our witnesses. Reformers tried to elicit words of comfort and blessings from the Scriptures. In the turmoil of the "spiritual warfare", however, they were obliged to place an undaunted emphasis upon "making disciples", Christians who have responded to the divine calling and who have confirmed the Gospel are invited to be His witnesses.
According to the Reformed tradition, worship is also a means through which Christians experience God's presence and divine grace. Thus Reformers had made every effort to eliminate humanistic or secular elements from the liturgy of the medieval church. The issue at stake here is that today's churches have contaminated with unbiblical elements. Accordingly it is incumbent for us to purify worship, with authentic liturgies.
The Reformed Church has claimed itself to be the universal or catholic church. It assumes that maintaining solidarity with other churches spread all over the world is of utmost importance among the traits of the church. Otherwise it cannot be a witnessing Gemeinde on earth. Even though, according to Augustine, the visible and hierarchical church is just one facet of the true church, the visible unity of the church and the communion of saints are indispensable to the witnessing Gemeinde.
As the Reformation came into existence to fulfill the commitment from God and the witness to the world, so does the Reformed Church ought to continue to execute them. Otherwise the Reformation is yet an unfinished task.
