This study focuses on how to overcome Eurocentrism in History. Most of the recent critiques of Eurocentrism which claim the successful accomplishment of this task define Eurocentrism from a very limited perspective. They argue that Eurocentrism essentially consists of the historical perception that, until the 19th century, Asia was not incorporated into the capitalist world-system which had developed in Europe around the 16th century. This study attempts to point out the limitations of their argument and to show instead that the first step in the overcoming of Eurocentrism as well as in a better understanding of Today s world is to consider modem world history as a process in which the Eurocentric capitalist world-system has incorporated the rest of the world. In so doing, this study also intends to suggest a redefinition of capitalism itself.
First of all, this study examines the theory of A. G. Frank that denies the exceptionality of the West and ultimately abandons the concept of capitalism while reevaluating the pre-modem Chinese economy. Frank's historical perspective seems to be thoroughly confined within a rather narrow modernist framework set mainly to address the reemergence of East Asia. This study continues to criticize some other recent researches which endeavor to restore the past of China by positioning "industrial capitalism' as a watershed event in the development of modernity. They fail to properly understand modernity in that they don't extend the bounds of capitalism to include non-European peripheries. Unlike old regionalism, modern Eurocentrism develops as a universalist theory of world history and also as a global political agenda, so its overcoming requires a more elaborate understanding of the capitalist world.
