The history of the Order of St. Benedict in Korea is distinguished in three steps as Seoul period(1909~1927), Duckwon-Yanji Period(1927~1946), and Waegwan Period(1952~ ).
In this study, I put the technical education and architectural activities of the Order of St. Benedict in short, and considered the influences of Order of St. Benedict which has done on the development of modem Architecture in Korea.
The results of this study are as follows :
First, Soong-gong technical school which the Order had founded was the second educational institution which executed modern technical education in Korea, and the first professional educational institution which taught systematically western technology. So it has important significance in the history of modem education in Korea.
Second, It contributed to spread the western architectural techniques and industrial arts in Korea.
Third, Order of St. Benedict had introduced the typical Romanesque style to Korea through monastery architecture. The Duckwon abbey's buildings were typical Romanesque style-'Hirsau school'.
Fourth, For the great works of P. Alwin, Order of St. Benedict had contributed to modernizing and indigenizing of Korean church architecture by accepting contemporary western modernism.
Fifth, For the mural painting of P. Alwin and P. Bouton, Order of St. Benedict had contributed to the advancement of modem Catholic art and architecture in Korea by introducing 'Beuron art' which keeps the religious and architectural characteristics and modernity.
