The aim of this paper is to reconsider the beginning and the ending scenes and their meanings in Shakespeare's As You Like It. Many critics have shown their interests on the pastoral vision and Rosalind's attitudes in the forest of Arden in the play. They all focuss their critical eyes on the scenes in the forest only.
They relatively did not show rooms for considering act one of the play which reveals only urban and court life. But act one of the play is the starting point to display the play and gives us the important meaning for interpreting the other situations or accidents in the forest. In this act, we can learn the reasons for Rosalind's escaping for the forest of Arden and her cross-dressing, which can not become a pivotal causation for other situations to come in the forest. Because they are only for her life and work as a means of her safe survival rather than for dramatic motivation or dramatic necessity for the episodes to come.
The ending, which is the formal procession with marriages, all characters gathered on the stage, does not persuade us to be satisfied with. We can not agree with the ending of the play. There are four couples to be married to. But any couple does not meet the demand of the reader's/audience's desire. Because the marriage situation of every couple has its own frailty.
In this paper I reconsider the established critical views of the play and also indicate the ambiguity of Rosalind's consciousness and action both in the court and in the forest. I reveal the frailty of the marriage each couple may get and that their marriage can not provide us with a persuasive wish-fulfillment comedy as a genre must embody. I also reveal there are other negative factors that are implied in their marriage and that we can not agree with their happiness.
As a problem play As You Like It provides us with open space, in which I show the other interpretation of the play with critical eyes of my own for wide and various understanding of the play.
