Many books and journal articles on Korean art were published in 2009~2010. These publications indicate the development of Korean art history. Art history was introduced and established as an academic field in the 1970s. Early scholars made enormous efforts to accept Western art historical methods as a means of laying the foundation for Korean art studies. Through their research and writing, Korean art history gradually established itself as a discipline in the field of humanities. Various publications on Korean art over the last two years show the ways in which the field of art history has advanced by the application of new methods to the study of art objects. Despite numerous publications on Korean art, much emphasis is still given to documentation, connoisseurship, stylistic analysis, and iconography in methodology. Art history in Europe and the U.S. has witnessed enormous changes in methodology since the 1970s. Most monographs and articles on painters and their works are primarily concerned with biographical approaches. The “life and work of a painter” model still gains wide currency in Korean art history. Documentation of the formal features of Buddhist paintings and sculptures is a dominant research method in Buddhist art studies. Studies of Goryeo celadons and Joseon white porcelains are focused exclusively on the typology and stylistic analysis of ceramics. Methodologically innovative and theoretically provocative scholarly works, however, have been published. This new phenomenon indicates that a radically new methodological turn is needed to change the current state of art history. The field of art history must embrace a wide range of new methods and interdisciplinary approaches to reestablish itself as a humanistic discipline. The field has to pay more attention to studies of visual and material culture that have played a central role in expanding the territory of art history. The field of Korean art history based on documentation, stylistic analysis, and iconography will face new challenges in the ever-changing world of humanities.
