This study examines how different parties differently conceived Crown-prince Sado’s Tragic Death(“Im’o-Hwa’byeon/壬午禍變”). Also examined is how King Jeongjo embraced the two formerly presented ideas about the Crown-prince scandal, and formulated his own interpretation of the controversy.
Jeongjo attempted to elevate the late Crown-prince’s status by proclaiming his own “Im’o-Eui’li(壬午義理, Righteous cause of the Im’o-year).” It was a significant revision of the earlier views on the issue of exactly what had brought about his father’s death. Jeongjo’s attempt practically put an emphasis upon Prince Sado’s virtue. Yet at the same time, it was also like a merge of some former ideas, which were either friendly or hostile to the Crown-prince before he even died.
A range of perspectives on Im’o-Hwa’byeon(壬午禍變) held by officials at the time are throughly chronicled in various political history books[Party Position manuals(Dang’ron-seo/黨論書)]. Most of all, it is ‘Hyeon’ryung-weon’ji-mun(顯隆園誌文)’ that can help us understand what King Jeongjo really intended. What he did was to make a preparation for the following kings’ posthumous recognition of Crown-prince Sado, the revision of King Yeongjo’s interpretation of the tragic incident, and the reconstruction of the Tang’pyeong/蕩平 policy.
