Recent studies suggest that providing planning tasks has a positive effect on students" language production. This planning research on language production has mainly examined the impact of planning on learners" linguistic performance, providing evidence that planning tends to improve fluency and complexity. However, the effect on accuracy has mixed results. The purpose of this study is to determine if different types of planning conditions alloted to Korean EFL students can promote accuracy in written performance. Forty college students studying business English participated in the research and were divided into four groups with different kinds of planning conditions. One group had no time to plan either before or during the task. Another group was only allocated time to plan before, a third only given time during the task while the final group was given to plan before and during the task. The results of the study show that two planning modes (on-line planning and a combination of pre-task and on-line planning) can have positive influences in terms of written narratives. Language learners tend to produce more accurate written language when they are not pressured by time limits. They also produce more accurate language when they are provided with extra time for pre-task planning combined with unlimited time to complete the task.
