This paper analyzes contemporary North Korean women’s identity politics from the period of socialist revolution to the economic crisis and their defections and resettlement in South Korea from a long-term approach. Existing studies have focused on North Korea’s subaltern women whom the communist regime utilized as an instrument for its rule and viewed as passive subjects for state power. However, North Korean women have been dynamic actors who challenge the patriarchal social order and actively participate in South Korea’s governance through the mechanism of critical negotiation. As postcolonial feminists argue, subaltern women do not necessarily exist as victims otherized by a dichotomy between the West/men and the East/women. Based upon postcolonial feminists’ perspective, this paper explores the dynamic identity politics of North Korean women who evolved from passive subjects for socialist revolution to active subjects for economic maintenance and have actively participated in South Korea’s gender politics for their new lives.
