With the purpose of the Joseon Dynasty’s understanding the West in 1880s, this research compares and analyzes Mangukch?ngp’yo which was published by Bakmunguk in 1886 and Yeojaechalyo in terms of the former’s background, original text and influence. Joseon Dynasty’s signing Chosun-the U.S. Firendship and Commerce Treaty in 1882 is followed by other successive treaties with the West such as the U.K. and Germany in 1880s, which led to joining into the Modern Treaty System. Therefore, it became necessary for Joseon Dynasty to break Haebangnon, which means National Security, and understand the West more concretely.
In order to meet the needs of the times, Joseon Dynasty tried to absorb the Western newest information while making Bakmunguk translage and publish The Statesman’s Year-Book in 1886, which was originally published in the U.K.. Mangukch?ngp’yo included general information about politics, economy, society and culture of 49 countries including Joseon Dynasty and Qing(China), which helped Joseon’s society accept the West. As the latest Western Perception book in 1880s, Mangukch?ngp’yo influenced the publication of Yeojaechalyo, the private geography book written by Oh Hoeng-mook. In 1896, furthermore, it resulted in the publication of geography textbook which was issued by Hakbu.
This research has significance for indicating the fact that Joseon Dynasty made effort into publication in order to understand the West in 1880s. Besides, it is meaningful that this research confirms the fact that the original text of Mangukch?ngp’yo is The Statesman’s Year-Book, which the earlier studies have failed. Moreover, it has a value of discovering that the influence of Mangukch?ngp’yo was exerted on not only the publication of Yeojaechalyo but also geography textbook of Hakbu in the period of the Gabo Reform of 1894.
