“Witchy girls” have often appeared in Hayao Miyazaki"s animation flim. These witchy girls are teenager with unusual mysterious abilities. Th e stories about them contrast withthe Western fairy tales, in which most witches are ugly old women who eat and harass weak people.
In Kiki"s Delivery Service, the witch is a reflection of pure human nature and man-made civilization and symbolizes the recovery of forgotten innocence. This type of witch is totally different from the violent and brutal western witches.
This work portrays 13-year-old witch who finds herself in the new world and develops her own abilities. In addition, this work shows “magic” is not a mysterious ability but rather is simply part of being human; the witch affirms her human nature by performing the magic. Therefore, this work clearly depicts the coming of age of a young girl, while completely overturning the old image of what witches are.
