This study aims to analyze the change in the number of professonal players according to the economic growth and to provide basic materials for the future prospects and the proper direction of professional sports. The study deals with five professional events including boxing. The main contents of the study are to find any relationship between economic and social growth, and the number of players, and to forecast the number of players by event until the year of 2000. The value of coefficient have been introduced to find the relationship and simple linear regression has been used to forecast the number of players, where sports events are adopted as `dependent variables and year as independent variable. Empirical studies have been conducted under the level of significance of five per cent using SPSS/PC+ statistic package. The main result shows that total registered professional players have been increasing over the past two decades but the growth rates differ a bit by event. Soccer, baseball and ssireum players are steadily increasing with the annual increase in numbers of 18, 34, and 3 respectively and golf shows a drastic annual increase of more than one hundred in recent years, while boxing shows a sharp annual decrease of more than one hundred. These results can be explained by economic factors such as growth of GNP and GNP per capita, decrease in average weekly working hours, increase in leisure time and household leisure expenditures and by socia factors including what we call 3D avoidance phenominon. When we consider the fact that the strenthening of national sports contestability and that sports themslves contribute to improving the quality of life, it is required to especially support the sports events which are under the decreasing trend. It is also needed some future studies will deal with policy-oriented alternatives for professional sports which are not included in this study.
