This paper is to review the social transformation and its implications of Taekwondo which are characterized by athleticism, sportization, and globalization with the brief overview of historical legitimacy of Taekwondo. In addition, this paper suggests the alternatives and prospects to overcome various crisis situations that currently Korean Taekwondo is facing. the athleticism of Taekwondo which was seen only as a martial art to practice mind and body and foster the national spirit served as an opportunity to change into a competitive sport of struggling for technical and mental mastery. Specifically, Taekowndo demonstration focused on game Taekwondo is found to significantly contribute to motivating the general public`s interest and learning, resulting in facilitating popularization of Taekwondo. Taekwondo was recognized in history and legitimacy as a traditional Korean sport which reflects the peculiar thought and value to the Korean people and was limelighted as important means to foster a national defense sport. In 1971 President Park Junghee granted writing of `national sport` to Taekwondo and it established itself as a traditional and national sport. Globalization of Taekwondo began with Taekwondo masters` going to foreign countries in the 1950s, although it was sporadic. In the early 1960s, the Korean Army Taekwondo Team leaded by Choi Honghui went around Southeast Asia. Taekwondo is a unique Korean brand attracting the Western society and is recognized as world culture sharing by world people beyond the concept of sports. Current crises the Taekwondo faces can be seen in five aspects: a split in organization, a dispute on legitimacy, management recession, weakening of international standing, and reduction of the position of Korea. In conclision, threats and obstacles sticked to the inside of the Taekwondo world should be removed first in order for Taekwondo to effectively overcome its present crisis and solidify its standing and location as the suzerain state of Taekwondo.
