This essay is a critical study of what part of Jesus` passion tradition Paul knew and how he interpreted it in his theological frame of reference. Though not fully adopted in a narrative form in Paul`s letters, Jesus` passion tradition is deeply imprinted in Paul`s christology in particular and in his theology in general: Most of all, Paul paid a close attention to Jesus` death in such a way that it sums up the whole career of Jesus on the earth. In the overall context of Paul`s theology, it serves as a yardstick to control all other aspects of Jesus historical legacy. It is observed that Paul plays over the manner of Jesus` death. Was his death a result of violent murder? Or was. it due to Jesus` voluntary will? Paul says yes to both of these two questions. He agrees that Jesus was killed by the Jewish opponents, and simultaneously it was also according to Jesus self-decision to give himself. Further, his death was ultimately based on God`s redemptive purpose. In this harmonizing strategy, Paul seeks to, embrace both the historical aspect of Jesus` death and its transcendental nature. `Cross` or Jesus crucified is the most powerful medium in which Paul symbolizes Jesus` death. First, Paul utilizes the symbol as an indication of fulfilling God`s redemptive purpose. In the context of Galatians 3:10-14, cross is a curse against the curse of the Torah, i.e. the curse transferred upon the sinless sacrifice Jesus. Second, cross demonstrates its paradoxical value in terms of the true wisdom(1 Cor. 1-3). In other words, the cross as a sign of political scandal and intellectual foolishness overcomes its stereotypical image by being reinterpreted as the way in which God`s true wisdom dominates all kinds of human wisdom. Finally, Paul interprets Jesus` death in a ritual frame of reference. The so-called Lord`s supper offers its historical setting in which Jesus` death is faithfully commemorated and continuously repeated with a call to mission kerygma. The ritual conduct plays a decisive role of keeping the redemptive significance of Jesus` death in the memory of late Christian followers and amplifying its present meaning. With regard to its present meaning, Paul chooses to ethicize its ritual meaning in the form of reasonable worship. In conclusion, Paul knew many different parts of Jesus` passion tradition, yet twisted it in a way adaptable to his overall frame of christology and soteriology. Its characteristic consequence is a theological endeavor for multiple interpretations of Jesus` passion and death. Thus, the theological voices concerning Jesus` death echo with diverse colors even today.
