Informal buildings are designed and constructed differently from formal buildings. In order to realize informal architecture in easier and less expensive ways, Digital Fabrication technology should be adopted from the beginning of design process until the construction phase.
Informal buildings have been developed and expanded around design of new buildings and now their scopes are extended to general constructions. Higher construction control and quality is required for the emergence of elaborate and sophisticated informal structures. Digital fabrication processes which are already commonly used in other industries such as car manufacturing, shipbuilding, and aircraft manufacturing are necessary to achieve better design and construction of informal buildings.
This article are written to promote understanding of digital fabrication and its extended utilization in the design, engineering and construction processes of informal buildings by explaining specific examples of ‘Tri-Bowl’ and ‘The ARC’.
In Tri-Bowl, we arranged two stages of the digital fabrication process according to the height, shape and materials of the building. The first stage is for the complex geometry of exposed concrete, accompanied by parametric design in 3D CATIA modelling of shell structure form and mold production for curved shapes by regular-distance-cutting of 3D model. Another stage is for the one-way curved aluminum sheet panels by optimizing digital fabrication.
In The ARC, the short construction period and difficulties in precise on-site production make digital fabrication process operated from the beginning of design phase. CNC Twisted Tube method was used to build the informal structures under the detailed numerical and geometric control. The ETFE(Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) system was also produced on the unified platform with combined 3D model control to save time in construction and achieve high-quality in complex geometric architecture.
To state the reason for adoption of digital fabrication in informal building design and construction, informal architecture requires design technology and engineering with much higher difficulty levels than general formal architecture. In the design and construction processes of informal buildings, numerical and geometric control to manage configurations of buildings with various implementation methods should be imposed from the beginning of project and continue all along the construction phase.
