The objective of this study is first to assess quantitatively the different usages of the word ‘time’ based on the sentences extracted from a corpus and containing that word, and ultimately to interpret the concept of ‘time’ through the lens of cognitive linguistics by classifying its usages into semantic function categories.
First of all, this paper is a study of lexis that combines corpus-linguistic methods of treating data with cognitive linguistic methods of interpreting data. Such a methodology has enabled me to conduct a research that is both quantitative and qualitative and, thereby, to enrich my interpretation while preserving objectivity.
The quantitative analysis of the semantic categories of the word ‘time’ has yield d the following results. The word ‘time’ most frequently collocates with predicates such as ‘kellita (take time), huluta (time goes by), ponayta (spend time), issta (have time), cinata (time passes by)’. As for the semantic categories of ‘time’, I have found as prevailing conceptualizations the following: ‘resource’, ‘movement’, ‘space’, ‘inanimate objects’, ‘animate beings’.
These results show how humans conceptualize the abstract notion of ‘time’. While they primarily conceptualize ‘time’ as ‘resource’, ‘movement’, and ‘space’, the conceptualization of time as a resource has appeared to be the most prevalent of all.
This study has, however, its limitations. It could not verify whether the data, which was randomly collected, were representative of the morphologic and semantic characteristics of the word ‘time’. Besides, not all the concordances of the lemma ‘time’ extracted from the corpus could be analysed. These limitations are expected to be addressed in a follow-up paper.
