The rhetorical analysis of John Broadhouse"s Musical Acoustics, first published in the late 19th century, shows what strategies lead to success for a textbook of acoustics for musical students. In addition, it reveals strategies for effective communication between idiosyncratic fields. This rhetorical criticism also finds persuasive features of an informative textbook, which makes potential readers purchase it and surreptitiously supports a specific theory among competing theories. Thus, it reveals there are double-layered discourses in a textbook. In this analysis, Aristotles" rhetorical notions and Lloyd Bitzer"s three elements of the rhetorical situation are effectively utilized to find the appropriate strategies for both apparent and immersed discourses.
