This study explores students` recognition and study of Japanese compound verbs mainly through the semantic function of 「~komu」 by surveying single major or double major sophomore, junior and senior students of a university. As a result of this research I could find out that though they study Japanese as a major, they generally use single verbs rather than compound verbs as they scarcely have learning opportunities to study compound verbs. However, it is discovered that most students want to study more about compound verbs so that they can express Japanese more concisely. So it is concluded that considering students learning needs, it is necessary for university Japanese education to provide students with more opportunities of studying about compound verbs. How to make students effectively study and learn compound verbs remains my next task.
