Teacher motivation plays a significant role in second language classrooms due to its potential impact on student motivation. It is particularly important when teachers are nonnative speakers of English since they need to develop and maintain their motivation both as learners and teachers. Though second language learner motivation has been widely discussed in second language acquisition research, teacher motivation has been rarely studied in any depth. Thus the present study attempts to investigate factors influencing teacher motivation through a survey with eighty in-service English teachers in Korea. The results showed that teachers` effort to improve teaching skills and their confidence in English were found to be important constructs in teacher motivation. A significant difference in teacher motivation was observed between those who have experienced in English-speaking countries and those who have not. However, teachers` major, gender, schools, and teaching experience did not have a significant influence on teacher motivation. The results of the study suggested the need for further study to investigate factors affecting teacher motivation and motivational changes in teacher development process. (Keimyung University)
