The object of the paper is suggest the conversion strategy for closed school building stock in order to provide affordable housing for socially disadvantaged class. Mose closed schools have been located in rural districts where housing demands are often lower priorities. But recent decline in urban center and low birth-rate put urban schools at risk of closure as well, requiring comprehensive countermeasures. This paper suggests the school buildings are suited for the conversion into affordable housing for the following reasons: first, the recycling of existing buildings stock enables the reduction of building cost and provides decent housings; second, the standard classroom could be converted into either one 3LDK unit or two 1LDK units with a minimum ceiling height of 3 meters, allowing sufficient space for installing mechanical services; and third, while low-cost housing demands are higher in urban areas, available lands for development are shrinking. In this respect, we investigated into the statistics and pilot projects related to the topic and suggested the conversion prototypes for school conversion into affordable housing.
