This study is aimed at exploring the inter-textuality of novels by Park Kyung-ni based on the tragic aspects of characters and related perceptions. Ranging from Calculations(계산) (1955) to The Land(토지) (1969~1994), the key theme of her novels is the tragic destiny and absurd pain of people. Such theme has been well-reflected in the initial and the following novels in portraying the tragic characters: The Daughters of Pharmacist Kim(김약국의 딸들); The Field under Sunset(노을 진 들녘); The Saint and the Witch(성녀와 마녀); Drifting Island(표류도); Butterfly and Thistle(나비와 엉겅퀴). The tragic aspects are represented as the following: unstable family history; absurd stigma; resistance or hamartia as to destiny; narcissism; alienation; loneliness; mysophobia. In the novels written before The Land, however, profound exploration of human conditions was rather weak. It was because all the following elements were intertwined: popular plots and ending; issues related to history and society; romantic love in connection with tragic human aspects. Nevertheless, the issue of human existence explored for decades in her short novels was fully covered in The Land, a long narrative of tragic destinies of people. The Land describes the human lives spanning five generations and the results of tragedy through her outstanding perception. Realizing the human limitations on her own, instead of a particular system, ideology, or religion, she accepted the ``absurd destinies`` and described them through the masterpiece. Park Kyung-ni was able to grasp the matter of human lives through her insights into the tragic aspects of people.
