The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether there are differences in English listening strategy use between high proficiency and low proficiency English students. Fifty- four university students participated in this study. A survey was conducted to investigate what students think English listening. Second, the study examined the differences between low level students and high level students based on his or her listening performance and listening strategy. In order to analyze the listening strategy of the participants- direct strategies and indirect strategies, Oxford (1990) criteria was adopted and revised by the researcher to suit the needs of Korean students.
The major findings of this study are: (1) Students largely used compensation strategies while social strategies were the least used. (2) Student’s use of listening strategies was correlated to their listening ability. First of all, the high proficiency groups used memory strategies more than low proficiency groups. In discussing the differences in strategy use between the high and low proficiency groups, the high proficiency groups most frequently used listening strategies. According to the study, it is necessary to lead the students to use listening strategies.
