The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of unmarried mothers with single children. The research method was guided by Colazzi’s(1978) phenomenological theory. In-depth interviews were conducted with 3 adult unmarried mothers who were raising one child.
The resulted founded that a unmarried lone mother’s decision of child-rearing meant ‘cognition of purpose driven life’ through analyzing 18 themes and 6 theme clusters.
Although the results of this study have the limitation of generalization due to phenomenological study, it will contribute to accepting and understanding mother-and-child family as one type of family rather than regarding them as being difficult of alienated in family and society, to recognizing the need of taking back their right, and to suggesting intervention methods for unmarried lone mothers.
