The purpose of this study is to examine the negative image of female smokers through the analysis of discourses on female smokers in Korean society today. This study attempts to disclose mistakes regarding the general belief that tabacco has been exclusively a man`s possession. The smoking rate of women was equal with that of men, until the etiquette of smoking established the function of tabacco imported into Korea should turn from medicine into a fad. So it is not right to say that the problem of female smokers has become a serious social problem only in these days. Female smoking has been revealed recently because of the openess of Korean society politically and socially. So women are not supposed to be blamed or slighted for smoking. Although smoking might bring an increased risk for heart disease, cancers, and respiratory diseases as well as a number of gender specific risks, still we ought not deter only women`s smoking behavior but not that of men, since it is their individual matter of choice, as long as they smoke only in a designated smoking section. Instead, our society should put forth an effort to understand the female smoker`s needs for smoking, psychologically and socially. Previous research shows that 1) the modifiable variables associated with smoking in Korean adult women included drinking alcohol, high stress status, dissatisfaction of life and no exercise. 2) More of the second child of the parents in the family smoke than do first offspring. 3) The female college students whose parents are smokers and are on bad terms with each other, and ignore their childem, present a high smoking rate. 4) Compared with senior students in college, junior students are inclined to think smoking is bad for female students. Most female students started to smoke after they entered college, their motive for smoking is mostly to relieve their stress. Further, their usual smoking places are restaurants or cafeterias. It is suggested that parents create a sound atmosphere in the home to build up a desirable personality in their children. It is also suggested that colleges should educate students about the negative effects of smoking via various kinds of deliverly systems to reduce the student smoking rate. Yet it is more important to open up and practice `counseling for girl students only` in order to understand their problems in college and high school levels.
