This paper tries to read Toni Morrison’s Beloved through the concept of ‘Han’. Han as a cultural phenomenon is triggered by a runway black slave woman, Sethe’s tragic life event. According to Fugitive Slave Law, she and her children must be returned to be slaves. A slave mother, Sethe had to kill her two years old daughter in order to protect her from the violence of slavery. This violent incident alienated Sethe from the black women community.
Morrison depicts Sethe’s untold traumatic memories as the black hidden history which was totally ignored and distorted. Her trauma cannot be healed because the black community is forced to forget the tragedy instead of remembering. Sethe’s untold pain makes her internalize ‘Han’. Beloved, Sethe’s dead daughter related to repressed traumatic memory of black slaves leads to Sethe confront her painful past and release of her Han.
Morrison restores and remembers the untold stories of black women with the collective voice of black women. The trauma can be healed when the black women unite together and try to release her[their] Han through African Shamanic ritual of their own. The act of remembering needs to be continued to mourn “sixty million and more” black slave victims and to comfort the soul of them.
