Amid increasing youth unemployment and declining job quality for youth in South Korean society, the issue of employment for young women has thus far remained largely out of the spotlight. However, this issue is an important one, because it encompasses two separate problems, forming a so-called "dual trap,": the instability of employment for young women and the problematic nature of youth employment. As young women are forced to cope with relatively fewer employment opportunities (especially regular positions) compared to their male counterparts, constantly having to move to low-quality jobs, and frequent employment discontinuity, many find it highly difficult to receive recognition for their professional experience and function normally in the job market.
This study aims to gain an understanding of the impact of young women’s first jobs on the rest of their careers. To ascertain the effect that one"s first job has on one"s current job, a survey was conducted on young women who have changed jobs at least once since their first job. The results of the survey show that job satisfaction is very low for both the first and current jobs, especially in terms of income level. The better a woman’s first job, the longer she held that job and the fewer times she changed jobs later in her career. In cases where a woman’s first job was an irregular/temporary position, the findings of this study show that the chances of such a woman’s current job being an irregular position is five times greater than if her first job had been a regular position. The greatest difficulty encountered by young women in the job-seeking/preparation process was the financial cost involved. The usage rate of employment assistance services was also found to be low. These results all attest to the need for greater accessibility to public employment assistance services and stronger policy efforts to reduce the financial burden on jobseekers.
In addition to the need to offer high-quality first jobs that allow young women to begin accumulating professional experience early in their careers, it is also necessary to offer long-term career planning services tailored to each women’s career histories and employment/educational training, further enabling them to acquire the professional/career experience they need. To achieve this end, the current policies on young women, which have so far been implemented independently of one another, must be made more specific and systematized, thereby satisfying the increasing need for consistent policy support for young women over the course of their lives.
