This paper examines the current status of urban crime and its preventive measures in Cheong-Ju. First of all, it is to examine the meaning of the term ‘urban crime’ in order to clarify the scope of the discussion as much as possible. Urban crime is not a scholarly definition but rather a kind of idiom that combines the words city and crime. Therefore, it is appropriate to understand that the urban crime is a violation of the actual criminal law that occurs in a large - scale space as a center that plays a diverse role after examining the terms ‘city’ and ‘crime’ respectively. In addition, from the viewpoint of prevention of crime, precautionary prevention is preferable to post-mortem prevention.
To investigate the crime situation of Cheong-Ju, the incidence and arrest rate of murder, robbery, sexual violence, theft, and violent crime between 2012 and 2016 are examined. These crimes are closely related to the people’s feelings of security as index crime. As a result, theft and violent crime account for about 90% of all crimes. In the case of theft crime, the arrest rate are significantly lower than other crime cases. The number of incidents of sexual violence crime and the arrest rate remain at a certain level. Robbery crimes are decreasing year by year, while murder crimes are increasing.
Therefore, in order to effectively prevent the crime of Cheong-Ju, CPTED should be introduced and cooperative policing have to be strengthened. These two measures have been implemented as crime prevention measures after the merger of Cheong-Ju in 2013. In addition, measures should be taken to prevent crime opportunities. For this, CCTV is used actively and police patrols should be strengthened.
Cheong-Ju is often called a crime city. According to the results of the study, the crime situation in Cheong-Ju is not serious enough to be called a crime city. However, even if it is exaggerated to a certain extent, the state of crime in Cheong-Ju city is not to say that it is safe from crime. Therefore, efforts to prevent crime should be made continuously until Cheong-Ju reclaims its original name as a clean city.
