Previous research testing the prediction of the Aspect Hypothesis(AH) has seen mixed results, which motivated us to explore possible sources of the problem. A case study analyzing the use of the past tense morpheme -ess by Chinese migrant workers showed that judgments of lexical aspects were influenced by various factors, resulting in research outcomes either converging to or diverging from the AH. Aspectual behavior of polysemous verbs in Korean, disagreement among researchers on lexical aspects of high frequency verbs, and indeterminate native judgments in survey studies all lead us to propose an underspecification approach to lexical aspect; verbs are underspecified in their aspectual features, and aspectual meaning emerges via interaction of the internal argument, adjuncts, and discourse-contextual factors. This proposal asks us to reconsider the claim posited by the AH that intrinsic aspectual meanings of verbs guide beginning L2 learners’ use of tense-aspect morphology.
