Social participation of students was possible only within the scope permitted by the military government, immediately after the 5·16 coup d’état in 1961. The representative area in which they could participate was the ‘rural movement’. Some of students who participated in the rural movement, however, conducted critical activities against the military regime, within legitimate spaces based on the rural movement and voluntary services as fences, regardless of the government"s intention. Although the military government attempted to tame undergraduates’ intention for social participation, by mobilizing them for the rural movement, the rural movement ironically stimulated the national emotion symbolized with ‘rural communities’ and contributed to extending popular foundation of the Movement against Korea-Japan Treaty.
Protest Demanding Korea-U.S. Administration Agreement occurring in June, 1962 was the student demonstration that was first developed after 5·16 coup d’état, beyond the scope permitted by the military government. The military government was seriously concerned about impact of the student demonstration. Therefore, it substantially reinforced the inspection of academic institutes. Students, however, could further develop the student movement, by organizing ideology(nationalism) circles, based on their experience of the demonstration.
