This study investigates whether VOT is a relatively more important cue in the perception of lenis and aspirated stops in Seoul Korean for male listeners compared with female listeners. This hypothesis is based on the results of previous studies which reported significantly larger VOT values of the aspirated stops and larger VOT distinctions between the lenis and aspirated stops for male speakers than female speakers (e.g., Oh 2011; Kang 2014). Results of a perception experiment showed that neither the effect of listener gender nor the interaction between VOT and listener gender were statistically significant, indicating that male and female listeners did not differ in the use of VOT in the perception of the two stops. A production experiment supported the results of the perception experiment. The VOT values of the aspirated stops and the VOT distinctions between the lenis and aspirated stops were not statistically significant between male and female speakers, suggesting that males progressed towards the VOT merger between the lenis and aspirated stops.
