According to several dictionaries and researches, the basic meaning of blue is the color of the sky. In this paper, the reason that ‘the color of the sky’ is able to be related to various meanings, and what generates the meaning shift of blue will be investigated through dividing the nouns that are modified by blue into natural prototype (blue sky) and other members such as blue chip, blue blood, blue eye(d), blue stocking, etc. It will be argued that blue sky has a relation to meanings including happy, cheerful, optimistic, creative, fanciful, sad, and these meanings are evoked by metaphor mechanism. While metonymy mechanism causes blue to have different meanings such as value, nobility, favored, intelligent, unhealthy, intensity. Last but not least, the fact that the color tones of blue expressed in the texts are not always the same will also be dealt with.
