In 1929, Carl Gustav Jung wrote a commentary on The Secret of the Golden Flower, by the request of Richard Wilhelm, the translator of the text. He found that symbols in the text are parallels of his patient’s dreams and fantasies. In his commentary, with an attempt to build a bridge of psychological understanding between East and West, he explains that Chinese symbols in the text have affinities with results in the Western psychological observation of the unconscious, finally developing a link with alchemical symbols.
This paper pays attention to this synchronicity of these affinities. Jung identifies the path to attain ‘the golden flower’ as “the individuation process”, which heals the splits between consciousness and unconsciousness, bringing them to wholeness in their psyche. This paper mentions two critical points in Jung’s comment by focusing on the differences of Wilhelm’s translation and Jung’s explanation because the differences make Jung’s peculiarity as an analytic psychologist clear. One is ‘the way of nature as a way of ego’s introversion when meeting shadow. Explaining the Chinese letter ‘自然’, Jung says ‘the way of nature’, which means ‘letting go of oneself’ or ‘action in non-action’ (無爲), should be an attitude of consciousness meeting with shadows during introversion. Alchemists too would meditate the ‘opus’ before they slate for their transmutation into gold.
The other is a unity of ego with anima or animus. The integration of the anima or animus is the most important step toward the wholeness, that is, the Self. Jung considers the coupling of ‘魂’ and ‘魄’ as similar to this integration, though ‘魂’ has a different meaning with his own term ‘animus’.
Jung’s explanation about these tells why a distinct thought of China is considered as same with Western alchemy and how these two separate ideas are synchronized into the individuation process of the psyche.
