The use of high visibility and standardized colors in safety signs can help workers pay more attention to the signs and link them to safety information. However, there are still differences in safety sign color standards across countries. Considering that foreign workers have increased in construction sites, it is necessary to establish clear and unified standards on safety sign colors so that safety signs can serve as an effective global communication means in construction sites. Also, it needs to be investigated whether safety color standards reflect the characteristics of construction that affect the visibility of colors, such as different workers or work environments. This paper thus performs a comparative study on safety sign color standards across different countries including Korea, the US, the UK, and Australia. By investigating the characteristics of construction, this study also suggests a guideline to improve the current standard for better application to construction sites. The analysis showed that blue is included in all standards, which needs to be avoided in construction sites, considering an increasing portion of aged workers with a low ability to distinguish bluebased colors. Also, the current Korean standard, which has only a single code designated to safety colors, needs to include tolerance or diversity of colors like other countries so that it can be better applied to construction sites with a variety of light environments (e.g., lower contrast in dark conditions that affect the visibility). This study is the first step to research and improve the safety color standard in Korea, which can contribute to better safety management in construction through a better use of safety sign colors.
