“Respectability” is a short story to represent the discrepancy between reality and appearance of a grotesque. Sherwood Anderson explores the inner truth beneath the surface of Wash Williams’s story filled with hatred, anger, and distrust. An effective telegraph operator Wash experiences a moment of shocking awakening after he discovered his beautiful wife’s promiscuity. But his tragedy becomes deeper and deeper, with the seeming hypocrisy and shallow nature of his mother-in-law who appears to be outwardly respectable. After all, it is his wife and mother-in-law that use the nature of Wash who is inherently good and beautiful for their selfish purposes. In particular, an egregious trick of the mother-in-law for reconciliation is the crucial factor that transforms him into a challenging and anti-social grotesque. Wash becomes an extreme misogynist who generalizes and inflicts his anger and hatred onto all women after the pure ideals of marriage and love are destroyed. Meanwhile, George listens to the story of hate of Wash and discovers the gap between reality and appearance, approaching the inner truth beneath his ugly looks. Although Wash does not offer a positive vision for women and life, George recognizes that it should be essential to explore the nature of human alienation and repressed humanity hidden behind the strange behavior of the grotesque.
