This paper tries to answer two research questions concerning the visual frames of the “Tohoku Earthquake” photographs in national and international newspapers. The study content-analyzed 696 Tohoku Earthquake-related photographs appeared in Japanese newspaper, represented The Asahi Shimbun, the U.S. press, represented by The New York Times, and Korean paper, represented by The Chosun Ilbo. Firstly, this paper asked whether the photographs of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake differed in terms of camera shot and frequency of visuals among newspapers. Korean newspaper used most frequently close-up shot, and The New York Times reported the largest percentage of its photographs using middle shot. Secondly, we examined which frame the press emphasized in the photograph. Dominant visual frames discovered in the photographs of Korean newspaper are different from The Asahi Shimbun and The New York Times. However, human interest frame and economic loss frame conceived as most fundamental and central emphasis in the visual frames of newspapers among Japan, the U.S., and Korea.
