PURPOSE: This study was performed to examine the effects of resistance exercise training on antioxidant enzymes activity and GLUT 8 expression in testis of OLETF rats. METHODS: At 30 weeks of age the male OLETF rats were divided into three groups: control group (LETO, n=8), diabetes group (OLETF, n=8), and exercise group (OLETF+RE, n=8). The exercise group was conducted to climb a 180 cm vertical (80 degree incline) ladder with weight secured to their tails. For 8 weeks, the rats performed 5 days per week which is gradual ladder climbing exercise. First week, the rats were familiarized with climbing up to the top cage without weight on their tails. After one week of adaptation, training session were commenced with intensity at 30% of each rat’s body weight; angling weight used attached to the tail with a plastic hairclip and string. RESULTS: The results of this study was following; Antioxidant enzymes were significantly differenced by resistance exercise training. In testes of exercise group, SOD/CAT/GPX were significantly higher than those in the diabetes group (p<.05). Also, GLUT8 expression of testes was significantly increased in exercise group compared with diabetes group (p<.05). CONCLUSIONS: Theses results suggest that resistance exercise in early stage of diabetes can improve antioxidant enzymes activity in testes tissue. Also, it positively affects glucose metabolism through increase GLUT 8 expression. Therefore, regular exercise may be an efficient strategy for male reproductive health.
