The Gyoyu, also known as 'Asobi' or 'Asobu', is a kind of musical event which was held at the Imperial Court in Japan. The Gyoyu was an indoor concert performed by the nobles; only the nobles such as the Tenno, the former Tenno, the prince and the imperial family could attend or perform it. The Gyoyu was not for the national ceremonies, but for entertainment. The Gyoyu had been established from the 8th century to the beginning of the 9th century and had become a requirement for the nobles. The imperial family and the nobility tried to learn the musical concepts that the Tenno was emphasizing by themselves. They learned to play music from musicians and they took for granted that they would perform the Gyoyu at the court one day. The Tenno had to be outstanding in criticizing music; he bestowed a gift on the best performer based on his precise evaluation, and this was one of his royal authorities. Performing and evaluating music and allocating prizes were thus not only cultural, but also political, activities.
