This study will examine the characteristics and significance tied into the local and international cultural identity of the Shanghai International Film Festival through understanding of its institutional system and operations. This paper’s data relies on files from the Shanghai International Film Festival’s web presence as well as academic resources. The content of the study is roughly divided into the following subtopics: direction of identity, institutional system, and operations and events. First, the direction of the movie industry will be studied, looking into the historical evolution of the Shanghai International Film Festival and its changing characteristics. Second, the nature of the system and Shanghai’s limits as an international film festival will be scrutinized through analysis of the institutional, political and organizational environments surrounding the Festival. Third, the industrial characteristics of the Shanghai International Film Festival will be examined by analyzing the operations and details of events, including the Golden Cup prize, movie forum, showings and film market. Last, we will address how the Shanghai International Film Festival is shaping its international and local identities, as well as globalization, through the ideas outlined above.
