A part of Vladimir Vysotsky’s text, “What Happened in Africa,” is directly cited in Svetlana Alexievich’s text, Zinky Boys. According to the concept of intertextuality, which was introduced to literary theory and criticism for the first time by Julia Christeva, no text is independent of other texts. One major method of intertextuality is direct citation. This theoretical fundament allows any given two texts to be interpreted in terms of intertextuality. Based on the aesthetic function of intertextuality and its new fields of meaning, the two abovementioned texts are analyzed in detail. Vysotsky, for example, defined his text as “a joke-like song.” This evaluation or categorization is legitimate when considered apart from Alexievich’s text. However, when considering Vysotsky’s text within the text of Alexievich’s Zinky Boys, Vysotsky’s text is no longer a joke but rather becomes a means of revealing the absurdity of the Soviet’s abnormality during the Afghanistan War (1979–1989).
