Abstract In this photographic thesis work, ‘In the Beginning’, Kim, the 1st author of this study deals with the fundamental questions such as ‘How did humans begin?’, ‘How did the time and space we inhabit start?’, ‘What did aspects of the very beginning look like?’, and so on. Kim believes that the sights of the beginning might have been left behind as some traces; he wants to depict such aspects of the beginning by using photography which proves being of any object in front of camera by capturing a realistic image of it as an index. In common sense, vital elements for life are air, earth, water, and light; to put them altogether as subject matters in his photographic frame, Kim went to many seashores along the coastline in Korea since Fall 2015. By composing those objects in square format, which generates less tension but more balance, with some distinguished horizontal lines, he attempts to represent an atmosphere of order in the very beginning of the world. For this project, he used a 35mm DSLR camera and printed of 120x120cm, 70x70cm on Textured Cotton Paper using a pigment-based inkjet printer.
