This paper addresses the mutability of the past in George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four as the strategic basis on which the Party erodes factual truths and maintains totalitarian control. The first half of this paper reads Orwell’s novel through the lenses of Hannah Arendt’s essays, “Truth and Politics” and “Lying in Politics,” drawing attention to the importance of facts and events as “the very texture of the political realm.” This paper analyzes the ways in which the Party in Nineteen Eighty-Four erodes and erases records and memories of the past, presenting the Party as the sole standard of “absolute truth” in the public realm. The second half of this paper draws attention to the use of technology in the novel which is monopolized by the Party to consolidate social control. In reference to Martin Heidegger’s famous essay, “The Question Concerning Technology,” this paper argues that technology—when used to watch, interrogate, and discipline Party members—leads to the subordination of human beings as mere ‘standing-reserve.’
