Objective: The aim of this study is to provide guidelines on the type of HUD and the optimal area of the windshield that will enhance your intuitive understanding. Background: Self-driving vehicles are emerging as a result of technological advances, and the range of human behavior is expanding. The collateral information on driving is increasing, and HUD is coupled with an augmented reality to convey information to the driver. Dense information and Position interference between the actual driving environment and the displayed information can cause distraction. Research is required to improve these factors in a way that helps to gain an intuitive understanding. Method: Separately proceeding 2 tests for apt area and type for HUD, variables, carried out from the relevant factors in existing HUD researches, were 9 areas on the driver’s side windshield and 6 types of HUD. Each of tests had been measured by reaction time and handling quality when acting LCT with indoor driving simulator. Results: In the intuitive perspective, the area 5, 6, 4, which were horizontal domains, were sequentially the most dominant areas. There are many legal regulations locating the HUD area to the middle on the WS, so this study proposed a second-best solution suggest and designated the worst area on LCT. Secondly the appropriate type is the simple contrast type in the salience aspect and the numerical box-contrast type in effortless aspect. Conclusion: For preparing new era of autonomous car industry, this study proposes the proper HUD area and type on driving. Application: Moreover, the purpose of this study is being the basis of the study that founds the optimum HUD area and type for each stage of the Autonomous Driving.
