The force of change of the Reformation had implications across multiple layers of society and the Church, including their political, social, and theological reform. This force of change was guided by the three theses that Martin Luther formulated in 1520. The first thesis was addressed to the Christian Nobility of the German Nation Concerning the Reform of the Christian Estate. Luther chose the Christian Nobility as the principle agent of the Reformation since the Roman Catholic clergy had lost their ability to reform. Drawing upon the notion of universal priesthood, Luther endeavored political and social reform. In the second thesis, The Babylonian Captivity of a Church, Luther criticized the Doctrine of Sacrament that had been distorted by Roman Catholic Church. Luther insisted that the Word of the sacrament should be the only way of redemption and that there should not be any fear or discrimination between clergy and lay people. The second thesis, also based on the universal priesthood, aimed for theological reformation. The third thesis, The Freedom of a Christian, Luther argued that Christians are free only in Christ but obligated to others and the world as a light and salt. This obligation described Christian’s ethical responsibility. Based on this study, this article makes some suggestions for current Korean church for social, theological and ethical responsibility and reformation.
